The scary truth about sugary drinks and tooth decay

Sugary drinks lead to tooth decay

Janssen Dental Clinic offers strategies you can use for a healthier mouth

It should come as no surprise that sugary drinks and tooth decay go hand in hand as logically as a poor diet and obesity. What you may not know is how you consume your favorite beverage matters to your teeth almost as much as what you consume.

“Sugary drinks and tooth decay are a common problem we see with patients, especially those who sip sugary drinks throughout the day,” states Dr. Craig Janssen, owner of Janssen Dental Clinic in Green Bay, Wisconsin. “The longer those sugars have to interact with acids on your teeth, the more damage can take place.”

The high levels of sugar contained in most soft drinks interact with existing bacteria in your mouth to activate acids that attack the enamel outer layer of your teeth. These acids can even have a destructive effect on the dentin layer below the enamel and composite fillings. The acids erode the surface hardness of the enamel and help create cavities.

Sports drinks, fruit juice also count as sugary drinks and tooth decay

Even drinks that bill themselves as healthy alternatives to soft drinks can wreak havoc on your teeth. Sports drinks and fruit juice also contain high levels of sugar, while their acid content typically is lower than that found in soft drinks.

“Rinsing your mouth out with water after consuming a sugary drink will help wash away the remaining sugars and acids,” Dr. Craig explains. “We also advise our patients to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to allow their teeth to recover slightly from the acidic reactions.”

Regular dental checkups and cleanings are very important in the fight against sugary drinks and tooth decay. Contact Janssen Dental Clinic at 920-983-8383 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Craig and his team.
