Keep dental health a priority during your busy summer

prioritize your dental health

Sunshine and healthy foods complement your regular dental routine

Dental health never takes a vacation, even when we do. It can be easy to put healthy habits on the back burner now that we can get outside after a long winter and chilly spring. The good news is some of the time you spend outdoors now can actually be beneficial to your dental health.

Vitamin D is an important nutrient for our bodies and teeth. This is because vitamin D plays a role in our body’s ability to absorb calcium and phosphorus, both of which are necessary for maintaining healthy teeth and bones.

The best way to obtain vitamin D is through exposure to the sun this time of year. The sun’s rays interact with cholesterol in our skin cells to generate the energy required for vitamin D synthesis. That’s a long of way of saying your body loves it when you get out in the sun a little bit, especially this time of the year in our part of the country.

More easy ways to keep your oral health in good shape

Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your health any time of year, but especially when summer’s heat causes more perspiration than usual. Water is the most effective way to hydrate your body.

Sugary drinks are bad for your teeth on multiple levels, but did you know that alcohol actually contributes to dehydration? Avoid chewing the ice cubes in your drink, as that can damage existing dental work as well as the enamel on your teeth.

Stop by your favorite farmers markets for the fresh fruits and vegetables your body craves. Carrots are nature’s toothbrush, while dried fruits tend to be sticky from the sugar they contain and promote tooth decay.

Keep your summer dental appointment

As tempting as it might be to skip your regular dental appointment if the weather is nice, keep in mind that rescheduling is not easy this time of year. Janssen Dental Clinic is fully booked into September, making your chances of landing another appointment unlikely in the near future.
