Our extensive exam can lead to early detection of dental issues

Addressing issues now can save time and money in the long run

“Going to the dentist” as it relates to Janssen Dental Clinic involves much more than just getting your teeth cleaned and addressing obvious oral health issues. Dr. Craig Janssen and the rest of our patient care team are committed to identifying issues before they become serious, so you can avoid costly procedures down the road.

Our focus on preventive dentistry begins with a comprehensive exam prior to the first dental instrument ever entering your mouth. We begin by compiling a complete health history. This gives us a better understanding of any underlying issues that may be playing a role in your oral health.

The next step in your exam is a full set of X-rays, including 3-D images that enable Dr. Craig to see what’s going on below the gumline and within the structures of your teeth and bone. Additional intraoral photos taken with a small camera enhance our ability to see inside your mouth without the radiation inherent with traditional X-rays.

It’s common for new patients to tell us our exams include more X-rays than they have ever had at one time. There’s a reason for that, and it all boils down to catching issues early in their development. Treating these issues early can save you time and money, and more importantly, help you avoid potentially more extensive procedures later.

A comprehensive exam that takes into account more than your mouth

Dr. Craig’s biological dentistry philosophy of care holds that your overall health directly impacts your dental health, and vice versa. Details such as your posture, lifestyle factors such as tobacco use and sugary drinks, wear patterns on your teeth, and biting physiology all take their toll on oral health.

Dr. Craig will also check your jaw for clicking, popping, muscle palpation, facial muscle tone, and whether you grind your teeth. You may not even realize you grind your teeth, but the pressure this puts on your teeth can lead to enamel erosion and severe damage.

Dental abfractions are one of the more common signals of developing issues in your mouth. These are the v-shaped notches that appear between your teeth right at the gumline. Rather than being caused by decay, dental abfractions usually are the result of teeth grinding.
