Sedation Pre Appointment Instructions
Follow these pre-operative care and sedation instructions before an oral surgery procedure:
Do not eat food or drink liquids, including water, for at least six (6) hours prior to your surgical procedure.
No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of your appointment.
A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home. If the patient is a minor, the escort must be a parent or legal guardian.
Please wear loose fitting clothing. Wear a short sleeve shirt or a shirt that can be rolled up past the elbow.
Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish.
If you are feeling ill, please notify the office.
If you take routine oral medications, please check with our office or your operating dentist prior to your surgical date for instructions.
Post Sedation Appointment Instructions
Patient cannot drive for 24 hours after taking sedation medication.
Patient cannot operate any hazardous devices for 24 hours.
A responsible person (above age 16) must be with the patient until he/she has fully recovered from the effects of sedation.
Patient should not go up and down stairs unattended. If necessary to go up and down stairs, someone should either hold patient’s arm or walk behind them.
Always hold patient’s arm when walking for remainder of the day.
Having nutrition after sedation is important. The patient should begin eating appropriate food as soon as possible. Do not delay.
Patient needs to drink plenty of water as soon as possible.
Patient may seem alert when he/she leaves. This may be misleading so do not leave the patient alone.
Patient should not carry, sleep next to, or be left alone with young children or small animals for a period of no less than 24 hours after the last dosage of medication.
Call us if you have any questions or difficulties. If you feel that your symptoms warrant a physician and you are unable to reach us, go to the closest emergency room immediately.
Drive directly home and call our office, (920) 983-8383, when you arrive home to report patient is comfortable and safe.
